Career Paths

What can I do with a Human Development and Family Sciences degree?

A degree in Human Development and Family Sciences (HDFS) can prepare you for careers in counseling, education/early childhood education, community and social services, healthcare, government/policy, and business related to individual and family development over the lifespan. Planning a career path often begins with what people do in their jobs (e.g., teach), but students often pick a major because they want to work with a particular population (e.g., at-risk adolescents or older adults) without knowing specific jobs connected to this population. This website for a podcast on HDFS Careers may also be helpful as you start considering your options. After graduation, many alumni continue their education in graduate or professional school, earning credentials needed to become counselors, marriage and family therapists, social workers, teachers, nurses/physicians, occupational therapists, attorneys, advocates, and more. If you are interested in graduate work, whether within HDFS or in a related field, you will need to plan your undergraduate courses carefully to align with any needed prerequisites for a given graduate program (please note in the menus below, italics indicate options that may benefit from additional training, certification, licensure, or graduate education). Career trajectories that leverage HDFS areas of study are infinite and this list is not all-encompassing, but can help get you started on your career development journey and inspire you to explore the possibilities!
